On this tour, you’ll get to experience some of the best that the island of Hawaii has to offer. We will pick you up at your Kona location and travel south through Kona Coffee Country, making stops at a farm, multiple overlooks, and a bakery. You’ll take in expansive views of the Kona coastline as you make your way to sample some of the island’s finest homegrown coffees and purchase some locally made Hawaiian sweetbreads and malasadas.
A stop at Punalu’u black sand beach is a great place to dip your toes in the water and grab some pictures of Hawaiian sea turtles in their natural environment. Next, our tour climbs 4,000 feet to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. At the park, you’ll see some of the world’s most unique geological landscapes, including the active volcano Kilauea. We will explore lava tubes, see some exhibits at the visitor center, and check out a few different short walks through various rainforest and native forest environments.
The tour continues to wrap around the island and we visit the historic town of Hilo, making a stop for dinner (purchased on your own) and checking out some waterfalls, including Rainbow Falls. The beautiful walks, gardens, landscape, and people are shaped by the volcanic events over the centuries that occurred around Mauna Loa and plentiful rain. We have umbrellas and towels for your use!
After dinner, your guide takes you up over the mountain for some epic viewing of the stars. We will find a dark, beautiful patch of sky (when conditions allow) and allow you to enjoy the view for a little while. Take some night pictures with help from your guide and you will get some beautiful memories. You won’t believe what is out there!
The tour concludes back at your Kailua-Kona hotel or Waikoloa Resort drop-off.
*We encourage our guests to purchase food, souvenirs, and other items directly from the many families and family businesses that we utilize on our tours.
Meals are not included in our deluxe and luxury tours. Your guide will provide a menu of options and will purchase some special items for you to try along the way as well. You may purchase extra, on your own tab, outside of what the guide orders on your behalf.
Our vehicles contain coolers with cold canned, non-alcoholic drinks for our guests. We don’t provide plastic water bottles but we do have clean, great-tasting water for refilling your own water bottle.
For our guests, during stargazing, we have hot water to make some tea, instant coffee, or hot chocolate to help keep you warm.
Depending on the group, we may make stops at Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Plantation, a honey farm, Hilo’s Farmer’s Market, food truck lots, or other locations. Your guide will choose the best spots for that day.

The family history starts in the 1900s when Japanese immigrants moved to Hawaii to work in the sugar plantations. They soon began farming and selling taro as well as the leaves. Grandma would make laulau to feed the family and friends, fresh meat wrapped and cooked in taro leaves. It became so popular they opened a restaurant to feed everyone, that was over 25 years ago.
