About this tour
Get ready for the swim of a lifetime as you gear up with your snorkel and dive into the warm waters of the Kona Coast. On this 4-hour Ocean Encounters adventure, you’ll travel along the stunning Kohala Coast, heading north to the breathtaking Pu‘u Ali‘i Bay, home to the magnificent Makalawena—one of the most beautiful spots on the Big Island.
This remote cove, with its lava rock formations and serene waters, is a true paradise for snorkelers. Teeming with hundreds of marine species, the area offers incredible snorkeling opportunities around the lava rock outcroppings that border the multiple coves. Don’t forget your underwater camera to capture the vibrant reefs and colorful fish schools!
Accessing this hidden gem by foot or car is difficult, so take advantage of this rare opportunity to reach it by boat. Please note, the location may change depending on weather and sea conditions.
Your tour includes all necessary gear: mask, fins, snorkel, and flotation devices if needed. Light snacks, soda, and water are also provided. And remember, using reef-safe sunscreen is required by Hawaii state law.

Sea birds flying overhead and nesting along the coast. Pu’u Ali’i Bay is not as easily accessible by car or foot, so it’s not unusual to find animals outnumbering people 10 to 1.
Ride along with our expert crew and marvel at their love for nature and knowledge through years of experience. On this 4-hour tour, don’t be surprised to find the island’s resident spinner dolphins putting on a show. They are famous around the world for being acrobats. With any luck, during winter months, you might get a glimpse of a migrating humpback whale. Big or small, fast or slow, we’ve seen them all. Enjoy a dip in the waters of this sheltered volcanic bay. Its isolated location is home to various corals and hundreds of tropical fish. You may even get a visit from a Honu (Green sea turtle). Protected and endangered, Honu are loved and respected by locals as an ‘amakua—an ancestral spirit offering lifelong protection, wisdom, and guidance.
